Match report

Scotland beat Bolivia 4-0 at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison to record a result that will have done much to settle any nerves ahead of more demanding tests to come. Lawrence Shankland opened the scoring inside five minutes, a composed finish that suggested a man playing with something to prove, and Scott McTominay doubled the advantage on 23 minutes with the authority that has come to define his performances at this level. Che Adams then added a third on the half-hour and, with characteristic directness, a fourth on the stroke of half-time to make the tie safe. Steve Clarke's men were rarely troubled. The attendance was not recorded.

From the Press Box

There are evenings in football when the result alone is insufficient to tell the whole story, and this was one of them. A World Cup stage, a scoreline of some authority, and a Scotland side that arrived in New Jersey carrying the quiet weight of a nation's considerable expectations — and left, it seemed, considerably lighter for the experience.

Steve Clarke has spent years fashioning something durable from Scotland's considerable potential, and on nights like this, the patience of that project is plain to see. This was not a side playing beyond itself. This was a side playing, increasingly, within itself — assured, organised, and at moments genuinely impressive.

Whether Bolivia offered adequate examination is a question others will raise. That Scotland answered whatever was asked of them with composure and confidence is the more important truth to carry forward from Harrison.

The group stage is a series of examinations, each one harder than the last. On the evidence of tonight, Scotland look ready to sit the next one.

From the terraces

"Four goals, a clean sheet, and Che Adams with a brace before half time. I keep checking my phone thinking I've misread the score. We're Scotland. This isn't supposed to happen." — @hampdenroar

"Shankland after 5 minutes, McTominay doing McTominay things, then Adams just destroying them. Genuinely had to lie down at half time. The nervous system can only take so much joy." — @tartanarmy_1978
