Match report

Scotland beat Bolivia 4-0 at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison to announce themselves in the most emphatic terms, with Steve Clarke's side offering a performance of considerable conviction that will have demanded attention beyond these shores.

Lawrence Shankland settled any nerves inside five minutes, converting with the composure of a man who has waited long enough for this stage and intends to make the most of it. Scott McTominay doubled the advantage on 23 minutes, and Che Adams, who was a persistent threat throughout, added goals either side of the interval — on 30 and 45 minutes — to render the second half an exercise in game management.

The attendance was not recorded.

From the Press Box

There are evenings in football when the result arrives before the occasion has quite caught up with it, and this felt like one of them. Scotland's performance in Harrison was not flashy, nor particularly fretted over — it was the work of a side that has quietly learned, under Steve Clarke's patient stewardship, to mean business when business is required.

It would be easy to dismiss Bolivia as modest opposition, and they were, but the manner of the win mattered as much as the margin. There was a composure here, a willingness to do the right thing at pace, that has not always been Scotland's signature. Clarke has spoken often enough about building something sustainable, and on this evidence the foundations feel sturdier than they perhaps did twelve months ago.

Whether the watching world takes notice is another matter. Scotland have a habit of producing their finest work just slightly out of sight. But performances accumulate, confidence compounds, and the question worth asking now is whether this group is finally ready to announce itself on the stage that counts.

From the terraces

"4-0 to Scotland. FOUR. NIL. I've been watching this team for 30 years and I still don't know how to process a comfortable win. Someone hold me." — @tartanarmy_1978

"Shankland in 5 minutes, McTominay doing McTominay things, then Che Adams with a brace before half time. Pinch me. Actually don't, I don't want to wake up." — @hampdenroar
